Summary :

Young Goodman Brown is about a man who loses his faith in people after witnessing what he believes is widespread evil. After his experience in the forest, he becomes suspicious, unhappy, and isolated for the rest of his life.

Plot Elements:

 

Exposition - Young Goodman Brown leaves his wife Faith at sunset to take a journey into the forest. Faith begs him not to go, but he insists.

Rising Action - In the forest, Goodman Brown meets a strange man who seems to be the Devil. He discovers that many respected religious people from Salem are involved in evil activities. He hears Faith’s voice and begins to lose hope.

Climax - Goodman Brown sees Faith at a satanic ceremony and believes she has joined the Devil. He cries out for her to resist evil.

Resolution - Goodman Brown wakes up alone in the forest. It is unclear whether the events were real or a dream. He returns to Salem but can no longer trust anyone.

 

 

Analysis

 

The story suggests that everyone has both good and evil inside them. Hawthorne criticizes religious hypocrisy and blind faith.
